Sure, but to me "by default" is what I get if I say _nothing_. But if
I say "I want this, that, and the other", I expect to get those and
only those. (This is sort-of like the --with-cflags-optimization flag
not turning on optimization.) I don't think I will be the only one
surprised by the current behavior.
I think we _do_ want to strongly encourage use of error-checking, so I
don't mind this property, but it should be documented.
How about a
# Warning: all error-checking defaults ON; you must explicitly disable
# it for each type.
# Warning: Use --enable-error-checking=none,... to reset the default to
# OFF for all types.
in the configure output/Installation file?
