Mule can do this to you if you have Japanese strings encoded in 7-bit JIS in your .emacs but for some reason isn't recognizing it correctly. I don't know if SJIS can do it. There's probably a better way, but I would go to the end of the file and execute M-x backward-sexp. That should help to localize the problem.
