Dear Bug Team!
My XEmacs has a not-quite-reproducible but regularly occuring (and
very annoying) behavior when saving a file: C-x C-s fails with an
error message "No file on this line" and the file is removed from the
disk. Repeating the command succeeds - the file is created again, but
with default permissions (even if it was executable before). When I
then change the file and try to save, it fails again. One thing I
might be doing before seeing the bug is calling write-file, but I
can't reproduce the problematic behavior just by doing
that. Restarting XEmacs reverts the behavior to normal - until next
time...

Huh? "No file on this line"? What does "save-buffer" know about
lines? Are you doing this in a Dired buffer?
Please check that C-x C-s is actually running "save-buffer" with C-h k
C-x C-s the next time this happens, in the buffer where the command
fails. Are you running latin-unity? (That shouldn't have anything to
do with this message either, but let's start by blaming me. ;-) Do you
have any Dired buffers? (that seems the most likely source of a
message about "file on the line")

No, I saw it when saving a Perl
script[1]. It is true that I also had some
dired buffers opened, and moreover dired-advertised-find-file fails for me
with the same error message. That *is* reproducible, so perhaps I should
start checking there...
I tried to debug dired-find-file, and got as far as dired-move-to-filename,
which raises the error because it doesn't find some extent - but why it
thinks it should be there I really don't know...
Please check that C-x C-s is actually running "save-buffer"
with C-h k

Urk. This is starting to sound more like latin-unity breakage (since
it hooks in way down in the file internals).
Try M-x latin-unity-uninstall RET. This will cost you some protection
against saving in the wrong coding-system, but most people have few
problems with that, while you're having consistent problems with
saving. I won't cry if that doesn't fix anything, less work for me,
but for you.... ;-)

regularly getting burned by XEmacs choosing the wrong coding
system. Perhaps I have excentric preferences - for example I don't
really care if accented characters in a web page source show right in
XEmacs, I just want them to *stay the same*, to agree with the coding
declaration - but I'm certainly glad to hear it's possible to disable the
feature...:-)

Here we go... :-( C-x C-s failed
again after removing the file from the disk,
with the message No file on this line. The problematic file is again a Perl
script (I can send it if somebody's interested, but I don't think there's
anything unusual in these files). latin-unity is disabled (incidentally, how
do I make sure it's disabled?). I don't have any dired buffers opened right
now, but I'm pretty sure I did have some in the same XEmacs session.
So, where do I go from here? Is there a way I can see how XEmacs got
to signalling the error (what Java calls exception stack)?
