Preferred mode for gdb?

        The "prog/debug" package has several different lisp files for
interacting with gdb - there is gdb.el, gud.el, and gdbsrc.el.

Which of these is the preferred gdb mode?  Are any of them obsolete?
None of them seem to behave quite right; before I spend time on
debugging I'd like to make sure I'm working on the right one.
