That's not exactly what I said.
True; the above was my interpretation of your words. Also, I agree
that certain high-level stuff is (relatively) easy to add to
redisplay, like the new specifiers or my lateish display-table hacks.

and the like doesn't work well with the current, line-oriented

The realistic question is: do we need that level of detail? (I
sometimes wonder the same about specifiers.) Ben felt very strongly
that we didn't, and I didn't quite agree with his position, but I do
see a merit to the question.
How much work is it to create such a redisplay engine? Could we use
the work done by Andrew Innes(sp?), who created the new FSFmacs
redisplay.
