:-) I just loaded up an sjt-xft-enabled gnus, and I _can’t_ see the Unicode
apostrophes on my posts. I suppose it varies with font converage.
2. i have menubars and popups with a tiiiny font...
Stephen, I’m getting font names treated as Latin 1 where, I believe, they
should be treated as UTF-8.
Actually, after a little experimentation with Xft, perhaps the font names
should be in Latin 1. But that would be fucked-up, because I’m sure the
TrueType spec provides for all of Unicode in the font names. Sometimes I’m
glad X isn’t on every desktop.
ps: what resource do i set to change the menu fonts?
XEmacs*XlwMenu*xftFont should do it.

XEmacs' specific package system
note: gnuserv-start is _fundamental_ --- look at the gnuserv(1) man
page and at the editclient.sh script that is placed into the etc
directory in the directory where you built xemacs

Can you see the character in question?
You can surpress the warning by following the steps detailed at
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-beta/200412/msg00171.html
that is, add (add-to-list 'display-warning-suppressed-classes 'xft) to your

This will save you a lot of grief as I have very little time to spend
on Xft right now. I apologize for that, but I really appreciate your
testing and reports, and AFAICT Aidan has things well in hand, so
maybe that won't be so bad.
Eric Knauel (who wrote the original patch but doesn't show up on this
list) will have commit authority _very_ soon, and Aidan's application
for commit privilege is in process, so you should be able to get
interim fixes even when I'm "away from my desk." :-)

Great!!
The warnings are debug information. I'll try to get around to turning
the volume down over the weekend. In the meantime, you can suppress
_display_ of the warnings (and the popup *Warnings* buffer) with
(add-to-list 'display-warning-suppressed-classes 'xft)
in your init file.
I think this is documented in (Internals)Future Work--Better Rendering
Support.

It does. The next thing I need to do is support font-preference-by-
character-set (Mule charset, FC language, FC charset, query font for
character set, probably in that order).

Damned if I know. Let's add the freetype and Xft manuals to the
general-docs package.

X11's XLFD standard specifies that font names are in Latin 1, less the
wildcards (* and ?). Ie, control characters are not legal. I
wouldn't be surprised if Xft has chosen to inherit that restriction to
avoid frightening the server, which _will_ typically end up having to
(try to) parse FC font names (even though it typically won't find them).

Describe the error messages you’re getting, and look into the values for
ispell-dictionary-alist . I should be able to give you something useful
tomorrow, either way :-)
Okay, I’ve installed ispell-francais on my machine, and
(setq ispell-dictionary "francais")
didn’t change the global default, which is a bug.
(setq-default ispell-local-dictionary "francais")
did, though, so I suggest adding that to your ~/.emacs, or ~/.xemacs/init.el
if you’ve moved to that.
