i think this is because andy forces redisplay of everything in order to get the
progress gauge to update. this is another thing that would fix itself
automatically if we put the gauge in the echo area.

You can't notice this with `C-x C-f', but try pressing `a' or `m' in a
Gnus buffer. For me, that brings up a message buffer with the problem
