I updated all of my packages yesterday (after not having updated in
quite some time) and now just about anything that uses c-mode produces
an "Invalid syntax designator" error on any special input. The error
is coming from (looking-at "\\s!").
This happens with xemacs -vanilla. Create a new file foo.c, and start
typing "main(".
Help! I can't use xemacs to edit anything anymore.

Yup, "!" is not a syntax designator in XEmacs 21.5. (Nor is "|".) I
don't really understand what these are for, the Emacs documentation is
terse and doesn't really make sense.
I guess you will have to revert to an earlier version of CC Mode.

Same version I was using before I upgraded all of my packages. (Almost

Yeah. Too bad the package manager doesn't seem to let you pick a
version.

Urk! Sorry about that, it was a careless fix to a recent bug in GNU
Emacs.

They're generic comment delimiters. You can put syntax-table text
properties with this value on a pair of buffer positions, and this will
syntactically turn everything between them into a comment. CC Mode uses
these in GNU Emacs to "comment out" C preprocessor directives (e.g.
#define) to speed up certain syntactic analysis. (It also needs the
category property for this).
"|" _is_ a syntactic designator in XEmacs, just as in GNU Emacs. AWK
Mode has used generic string dellimiters to mark unterminated strings for
over a decade. ;-)
