I am using the latest CVS source code compiled under native Win32 and I keep having problems with Gnus for quite a few months now. I decided to trace the problem to its source. The bad effects: sending a message with (French) accented characters results in message being split in several parts, some of them strangely encoded. Some possible root of the problem: if I ask for (charsets-in-string "é") I get: (japanese-jisx0212) which is certainly unintended. Apparently the problem is in the char-charset builtin function.
