i'm on 21.2.31; i have done M-x customize-face RET RET and then i noted that the face specification for "default" is an editable lisp expression, while the other ones are the usual stuff, with "Attribute" buttons and various editable fields i may be mistaken, but the face specification for "default" used to be no different from the other ones
