ding. It's a Gnus issue (alternatively, they can say they don't
support no-MULE XEmacs any more). It's possible that we should also
make an adjustment, but since they've got compatibility code in
place, they're going to be the best bet for a diagnosis.
I don't see any reason not to improve compatibility in `mm*.el' for
XEmacs (MULE or non-MULE). But since most of the currently active
Gnus developers don't use XEmacs, I'm afraid this won't happen unless
you (i.e. XEmacs developers and users) contribute patches or concrete
proposals.
(I don't even have a non-MULE XEmacs available for cursory tests.)
