(2) I don't know what the current status is, but at one point image- mode was considered "dangerous." image-mode itself was pretty poorly coded (and still is in at least some parts), and at one point there were image-related crashes because of experiments with the core image-handling C code. I believe there were also problems with reverting the data to original in some cases. It certainly doesn't provide any customize hooks, so it should be considered old and unmaintained.
