Why?
Because Lisp storage is not reclaimed by the system.
It sounds like this is not the behaviour under NTemacs and UNIX.
I don't think my XEmacs shrinks back to 8M after I quit Gnus. In
fact, I am fairly certain I've never seen that happen.
