The current facts are basically the same. Ie, Ben's new APIs should
have the same semantics from your point of view in the current 21.5.6.
No work has been done on making coding cookies work better in 21.5
than they did in 21.4. Of course, there's a good chance he's broken
some stuff.
There are three basic differences for the future:
1. Ben has already implemented a more flexible autodetect framework.
Currently it just implements the same scheme we already have, but
it's extensible to give more fine-grained judgements, so should
give more accurate results.
2. It's not clear what to do about either -*- coding: -*- cookies or
the more general versions (such as xml:lang, etc). We'd like to
avoid the "multiple read" approach to detection.
3. The decoding stuff is going to be more exposed to the Lisp API,
which should make it easier to improve it.
The big problem right now is that only Ben knows how it all works and
fits together.
