You'd have to work pretty hard to break that for non-Latin fonts only, don't you think, since fonts are bitmaps and don't know about colors at all. Ditto inverse video, underline and strikethrough. What you can't do with Custom is make bold or italic, or change the font family or size. Furthermore, I still see occasional anomolies where the use of Customize can result in changes in a Mule font it's not supposed to touch. (I don't know how to replicate, and it may not be relevant since it's often with 21.1 XEmacsen.) Jan> 2. No. By and large "bold" and "italic" are meaningless in Japanese (I have seen such fonts but they are not common AFAIK, certainly not in X bitmaps and free fonts), and emphasis indicated by dots above characters is a common alternative to underlining. Also scaling an ideographic character is likely to give poor results, even with Type 1 and TrueType fonts (free ones, anyway). The font families common in Western scripts (Courier, Times, Helvetica/Arial, etc) do not exist in Japanese. I assume that Korean Hangul, Indian Devanagari (etc), and Arabic each will present their own unique problems. I do not understand why size is such a problem; I guess it's simply that Custom doesn't understand "fontsets" and so doesn't frob sizes for non-Latin fonts? Family should be fixable by allowing the user to change family independently for each charset in the fontset. I don't really know what to do about weight and slant. English text normally indicates emphasis with slant and weight within a family, but Japanese typically uses a different font family, as if you put ordinary text in Times Roman and indicated emphasis with Helvetica. And I don't know how those concepts apply to Arabic and the south/southeast Asian scripts. And it would be nice if Custom understood specifier domains/locales.
