has anyone successfully compiled the tiff library for native win32? there's no
makefile provided and i don't have the patience to construct one myself and sort
out which files are needed.

The version I have has a make file for nmake in
contrib/winnt/libtiff.mak. It claims to be tiff-v3.4 but I can't
remember where I got it. I don't recall any particular problems
building the library, but I did it last September and can't remember
the details.

A while back I contributed a tiff.mak makefile to XEmacs -- I think it's
still in <XEMACS-SRC>/nt/ but I haven't re-downloaded the source in
quite some time. In any case, you'll need to patch the makefile to
compile tiff-3.5.2 (which is the last version of tiff I built for
XEmacs). I've also attached a local copy of tiff.mak just in case it
has been removed from recent XEmacs sources (the attached tiff.mak does
NOT include the following patch; it's straight from 21.1.22).
