Hello
I have heard no very positive things about Mule UCS in the sense that
nobody besides its author really understands it.
that's why I am asking is it recommendable to use it via
(require 'un-define)
and
(set-default-coding-systems 'utf-8)

I am asking this because there are some issues with the latest babel.el
which now works with Xemacs (thanks to some extra work by the author)
but still has some coding issues, which I will report in the next email.

You must use Mule-UCS with 21.4 to get any Unicode support at all.
You should never use Mule-UCS with 21.5 as it provides no Unicode
features that 21.5 doesn't, and makes a mess of things internally. If
there are Mule-UCS APIs that you want to use in 21.5, we should
implement them using 21.5 native function.

It isn't, it's a package. What makes you think it's shipped with
21.5? We certainly don't do that.

Well, uh, I compiled and installed xemacs-21.5 and then the sumo and
sumo-mule packages and ups Mule-UCS was there!

The whole point of the packages is that they are distributed
independently of the version of the core. It makes no sense to
proliferate SUMOs simply to distinguish *one* package (Mule-UCS is the
only package that has different usage for 21.4 and 21.5).
I suppose we could remove Mule-UCS from the SUMOs entirely and make
21.4 users download it separately, but it was added around the time
that 21.1 was released so it's in the SUMO for historical reasons.
