You are right. However, choosing good color defaults is *hard*. I
spent several hours gazing at rgb.txt and various Lisp and C buffers
before I came up with the current defaults. I think that the dark
defaults work out much better, probably because I switched to dark
background at the time and genuinely needed good defaults for myself.
To illustrate: brown4 is in low contrast with red4. I could of course
choose brown3 or brown2, but those would be in low contrast with
reference-face (red3) -- and brown1 is too ugly. So browns are out.
Choosing another color creates similar problems, especially on 8bit
displays where many colors are approximated to something entirely
different.
If you can come up with a good light foreground color for
font-lock-function-name-face, I'll be thankful!
