I think that the dark defaults work out much better, probably because I switched to dark background at the time and genuinely needed good defaults for myself. To illustrate: brown4 is in low contrast with red4. I could of course choose brown3 or brown2, but those would be in low contrast with reference-face (red3) -- and brown1 is too ugly. So browns are out. Choosing another color creates similar problems, especially on 8bit displays where many colors are approximated to something entirely different.
