But this would be possible if you ditched the modeline and minibuffer
entirely and put them all in a semi-permanent gutter. Alternatively you
could have a fifth gutter that sat below the minibuffer.
I guess if we made native edit fields behave like buffers (Ben thinks this
is easy) then putting the minibuffer somewhere more arbitrary would be
straightforward.
Why not just really embed a new XEmacs text area in there? Minibufferless,
unsplittable, no menubar, no scrollbars, etc.
Or allow stacking of items in the gutter, not the all-or-nothing we have
now. Eventually I think we should try to make the `normal' XEmacs frame
completely barren, and populate the menubar, toolbar, tab control, progress
gauge, minibuffer, etc from lisp.
