I am not saying it isn't a bug. I just think that it might get
triggered by the font you have:

you're right, but i see it for the 'f' or 'i' more than for the
't'
but i did try several fonts, and they all gave the same error,
can you tell me which one you're using, and how i can obtain it if
i don't have it yet ?

New subject: More font droppings [was: selection or font problem]
The attached PNGs show a problem I'm now having with XEmacs 21.1.6.
The last character on a line (or string) gets left with what looks
like an underscore cursor. It's intermittent (doesn't always happen)
but happens a lot. This occurs more frequently in buffers I'm
actively typing into (I think) but also in buffers that are displaying
unchanged text freshly read from an external source (eg, in the splash
screen %-P of `xemacs -q', 2 of 3 tries). The artifact can occur just
before a line-continuation glyph at the right edge of the window.

Refreshing the display may help or hurt, but single-stepping the
cursor over it usually helps. (Doing so very quickly may not.) If it
appears, then it can get autowrapped, and will be carried to the next
line. Typing more on the same line or deleting to the left of it does
not seem to change it. And it's infected the toolbar! When the
toolbar "Tools" item is activated, the underscore does not turn red
and does remain.

More info. I've also seen it in the mode line, and there it is in
(probably) the default face, and not in the face specified for that
part of the mode line. (That's consistent with what happens when the
menubar item is activated, of course.)

I don't know what fonts you're using, but this looks a lot like a
problem I have when using TrueType fonts via the xfstt font server. I
get this in xterms as well as in XEmacs, but only with the TrueType
fonts.

I don't know what fonts you're using, but this looks a lot like a
problem I have when using TrueType fonts via the xfstt font server. I
get this in xterms as well as in XEmacs, but only with the TrueType
fonts.

i just checked , and i still have the problem without xfstt running, so
without true type fonts.

Thanks for the hint. I'll follow it up; tracking down exactly what
fonts are used in XEmacs can be an exercise in pretzel logic,
unfortunately.
I don't think that it's TrueType fonts, though; I don't use xfstt (I
don't have a font server on my FontPath), I don't think my X server
(XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1 as implemented in Debian's xserver-svga_3.3.3.1-10
package) is TrueType-enabled, but I can't swear to that, and I don't
think I have any TrueType fonts installed on my font path.

Yeah, your problem looked different. But you're not guaranteed to be
running without TrueType fonts. There are TrueType-enabled X servers
available (Abomination!---use the font server), and I think XFree86 is
definitely adding that capacity to their distribution.
