Thanks for the hint. I'll follow it up; tracking down exactly what
fonts are used in XEmacs can be an exercise in pretzel logic,
unfortunately.
I don't think that it's TrueType fonts, though; I don't use xfstt (I
don't have a font server on my FontPath), I don't think my X server
(XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1 as implemented in Debian's xserver-svga_3.3.3.1-10
package) is TrueType-enabled, but I can't swear to that, and I don't
think I have any TrueType fonts installed on my font path.

Yeah, your problem looked different. But you're not guaranteed to be
running without TrueType fonts. There are TrueType-enabled X servers
available (Abomination!---use the font server), and I think XFree86 is
definitely adding that capacity to their distribution.
