Yes, but I believe we already do caching.

As always, the problem is to get the balance right between
reinventing
the wheel and getting hooked on some external work that we don't have
control on.
Maybe we should just write somewhere that we have nothing against
unified interface graphics libraries, but until one gets written that
doesn't suck we roll our own.
