Hello
I am using Kubuntu 10.04 where the shift f keys did not work in Xemacs.
Thanks to Steven Turnbull the following lines in the .Xmodmap
keysym F1 = F1
keysym F2 = F2
keysym F3 = F3
keysym F4 = F4
keysym F5 = F5
keysym F6 = F6
keysym F7 = F7
keysym F8 = F8
keysym F9 = F9
keysym F10 = F10
keysym F11 = F11
keysym F12 = F12
Did the trick.
However this does not work any longer in Ubuntu 12 and I don't have
access to very important key binding.
Anybody has an idea?

access to very important key binding.
Only think I can think of is that Ubuntu 12 only supports XKB
protocol, not legacy keyboard configs.
Have you tried setxkbmap and friends?

the issue is almost 10 years old. You were helpful so many times :-D that my
memory failed :'(

I will try, Ubuntu, in my
eyes is not very user friendly and the access
to that options is not as obvious as in Kubuntu..

Hmmm.... Newer xemacs 21.5 versions should "just work". I have a patch
for 21.4 that you can find on my website (http://xemacs.seanm.ca/).
While I use Ubuntu 12.04 all the time (it is our main distro at work) I
have never used the kubuntu version.

My Fedora X server doesn't seem to suffer from this problem - XEmacs 21.4
can identify shifted function keys without difficulty. Nevertheless, I
applied your patch to the 21.4 sources and it doesn't make things worse for
me, so I pushed your change to the 21.4 repo. Uwe, please checkout a new
copy of 21.4 and see if this helps.

Right. The shift-f1-f12 problem should have been addressed comprehensively
by https://bitbucket.org/xemacs/xemacs/commits/f3ab0c2 . Please tell me if
it still doesn’t work, there are other more hackish approaches we can take
(among them that used by the 21.4 patch Sean has).

FWIW, I'm running Ubuntu 12 without an xmodmap, and pressing shift-f2
in xemacs says that Sh-f2 is not defined. The same happens for the
other keys, except shift-f1 appears to be mapped to f1 which appears
to mapped to describe-key.
