Hi, XEmacs.
XEmacs 21.5.b31, 21.4.22
At the moment, when I compile cc-align.el on either of the two versions,
the resulting cc-align.elc is empty. More precisely, it looks like
this in its entirety:

;;; compiled by acm(a)acm.acm on Fri Sep 9 10:53:29 2011
;;; from file /home/acm/cc-mackenzie-2011-08-30/cc-align.el

Is this a known bug? What can I do about it?

Had the same problem when I installed the latest cc-mode and followed
the instruction in the README file.
Solution was to do a byte-compile-file cc-align.el from xemacs
afterwards.

Outch! I didn't know the bug went that far back.
Solution was to do a byte-compile-file cc-align.el from xemacs
afterwards.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm the maintainer of CC Mode. I'm
looking for a solution that would be, as far as possible, invisible to
XEmacs users. Maybe I should check the size of cc-align.elc at
initialisation time, and `byte-compile-file' it if it's too small.
It would be nicer still to fix the byte compiler.

No.
What can I do about it?
Report it properly? This is code we don't have easy access to, or any
knowledge about, no? We know nothing about your build process, while
last I looked the XEmacs package build process basically ignores Make
dependencies and recompiles everything every time, so we're not going
to observe this problem given what Thomas says about the workaround.
If you *are* using the XEmacs build process and still observe this,
that would be useful information in itself.
Yes, this is a showstopper, so we'll get around to finding your code,
downloading it, and bootstrapping your build process. But it will
take a lot less time if you can help us by localizing the bug a bit
more.
