This is a Customize problem, then.
Well, I am not sure it is only a problem with Customize. If I set the
default font to be Courier New, 9pt in the custom.el, Bold and Italic
are 12 pt high. When I use resources to do exactly the same thing,
Bold and Italic are 9 pt high. However, in custom.el, I use only the
"short name" (i.e. Courier New) and in the resource, I use the long
name (-monotype-Courier New-etc). However I have only one Courier New.
I have used GTK Emacs 21.1.12 for a while and I don't remember to have
run into this problem. However, I was only using programming modes
which seldom use bold fonts so I may have missed the problem.
I have not tried 21.4.3 with GTK since it was totally broken
(scrollbars missing and and additional window was displayed, like a
speedbar but under XEmacs and horizontally).
I am using XFree 4.0.3 with xfs font server patched to use True Type
font as well. Note, that the problem was the same with standard xfs
and Courier in Type1.
