I get a wrong type argument error whenever I try to M-x compile
something.
To reproduce, start xemacs -vanilla. M-x compile. Enter "echo abc"
as the compile command. Then I get the error message

Like Vin, I'm unable to reproduce. But:
(xemacs-base :version 1.61 :type regular)
compile.el lives in xemacs-base, and your version is pretty old (the
current stable version is 1.71, and 1.75 is in pre-releases). Could you
try upgrading your packages and see if that helps?

Ok. I don't normally update until a sumo package tarball comes out,
but maybe this is an exception. (Plus it's not always easy for me to
use pui to upgrade through our corporate firewall.)

There is a fix for precisely that in the current compile.el, so I'd
indeed encourage you to upgrade.

Thanks for the hint. I grabbed the xemacs-base 1.71 package and it
got installed in my global xemacs-packages/lisp directory.
I still get the same error. Is there something else that needs to be
done? Or was I supposed to get the 1.75 pre-release?

This went into 1.72 (Mike, I guess you meant this):

* compile.el (compile-internal): Re-set `outwin' because it may
have changed after `save-window-excursion'.
1.75 will most likely be transferred over to stable packages dir this
week, so testing it would be most welcome.
