Color discrimination varies widely between individuals. Some people
are colorblind. I've read that it's considered poor interface
design to distinguish interface elements by color alone - there
should also be a difference in absolute brightness level.
Then we should be OK:
1) We have the bevel effect for distinguishing widget elements
(modeline included) from the text area;
2) gray75 is less bright than gray80.
