Dear list members,
I have a .Xdefauts to change Xemacs color as following:
Emacs.default.attributeBackground: White
But after I apply xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults,
The Mozilla menu bar font is changed to a small size. I am wondering how
to keep me Xemacs color and not change Mozzilla menu bar font.

Before you run "xrdb -load ...", try running "xrdb -query". If it
produces any output, then don't use "xrdb -load ..." , but use
"xrdb -merge ..." instead.

Another problem is why I need to apply "xrdb ..." every time when I
restart the Linux system? Do I miss something?

I have the following stanza in my .xinitrc which is called through
startx every time I start a new X session:

| userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
|
| if [ -f $userresources ]; then
| xrdb -merge $userresources
| fi
`----
Note, that you should put something similar into .xsession, if you
were using xdm.

Huh? It has nothing to do with modernity AFAIK.
They're just two different files with different semantics (.Xdefaults
is read by X clients, whereas .Xresources is passed to the X server
via xrdb).

Different semantics, yes, but I've been asked on three separate
occasions by three separate X maintainers from two different
organizations to eliminate references to .Xdefaults from XEmacs
documentation.

The "X resources db" is generated by merging multiple sources. One of
these sources is *either* the data which is stored in the X server by
xrdb *or* the contents of ~/.Xdefaults.
The ~/.Xdefaults file is only used if no data has been stored by xrdb.
It's common for startx, xdm etc to be configured so that if the file
~/.Xresources exists, it is passed to xrdb. In this case, ~/.Xdefaults
won't be used.

The problem was solved by creating .Xresources and applying
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
