showed two heads, tip and gnus-5_8-branch
I'm not a mercurial wisard, and I couldn't find any way of getting the
tip (5.10.10) (which is what you get if you use the package manager
and experimental at the moment) short of completely scrubbing the gnus
directory, and its .hg subdir, except for hgrc, and then

which worked.
What did I do wrong?
Nothing. The top-level repo on Bitbucket needs to be updated.
The gnus-5_8-branch head seems to be an artifact of the conversion from
CVS. Thanks for mentioning it; I'd forgotten about it. I'll close off
that branch when I find the time.
Are there any other packages with similar problems?
IIRC, there are some other packages with multiple heads. IMO, that's worth
cleaning up, but it's not urgent.
Any package updates since 15 May are not reflected in the top-level
repo. A quick look at the archives for xemacs-patches would give some
hints as to which ones are affected (e.g., prog-modes).
Anyone heard from Norbert recently? I tried pinging him at his
xemacs.org address, but I didn't get anything back.
