I just noticed another aspect of this problem - I think it's related to my
use of SNiFF[1] - that is, I just noticed that I've never seen it except in
an XEmacs in which I've initiated communication with a SNiFF process, and
it starts happening almost immediately after initiating the communication.
This is interesting because as with your example it's a case of XEmacs
communicating with another process.
SNiFF is a source browser-type tool sort of like oo-browser or (I think)
Cygnus' Source Navigator. It has nice integration with XEmacs in that you
can display results of retrieves, etc. in XEmacs rather than the integrated
editor - they provide a sniff.el that sets up the communication, adds menus
for controlling SNiFF from XEmacs, etc.
Anyway, I thought this was a relatively recent phenomenon - almost
certainly somewhere in the 21.2 series, but not sure where - but you say
you've seen it with 20.2 as well...
Would anyone like to look at sniff.el to see if anything jumps out about
it? It's over 600 lines long, so I hate to just post the thing...
