Now that I have GNUS working with gmail, news.gmane.org, and
news.eternal-september.org, I've noticed an issue with getting new
mail and articles. When starting gnus, everything works as expected.
However, after being idle for some period, pressing "g" to get new
messages seems to hang for a long time. I end pressing Ctrl-g to let
it progress. Then I see messages about using ssl_connect.
I assume that the previous ssl connection has been dropped and xemacs
doesn't know when I press "g". The Ctrl-g does something to let
xemacs know.
Is it not possible for xemacs to detect this quicker? Or is this how
it's supposed to work?

often doesn't know that the connection has been dropped.
As a consequence, I have this:
(defun kill-openssl ()
(call-process "killall" nil nil nil "openssl"))
(add-hook 'gnus-get-new-news-hook 'kill-openssl)

I find that openssh also has a number of problems with figuring out
whether a connection is still live or not, on Macs. I wouldn't be
surprised to find that that's an issue with OpenSSL on that platform.
Don't both of you use Macs?

Yes, I was using a Mac for this. But I just tried on my Linux box. I
have the same problem there. (There are other issues though. It
won't connect to news.eternal-september, but that could be caused by a
misconfiguration. It may not have all of the same config as my mac.
But reading gmail and news.gmane.org works on the linux box.)

Thanks, this works nicely and I no longer have this problem. There is
a related problem, though. If I'm in the *Summary* buffer for my
gmail inbox and stay there for some time, I have problems when I quit
the buffer. Gnus says it's updating marks and hangs. Pressing Ctrl-g
and then q, I see xemacs starting openssl again and xemacs quickly
returns back to the Groups buffer.
I guess I need to do the same thing with gnus-summary-exit-hook.

No, it's really just a kludge. What's needed is SSL/TSL suport directly
in XEmacs, I think.

not sure how its done legally, but a lot of GPL programs such as esmtp are
linked to OpenSSL even in Fedora.
Gnutls appears slightly more high level, the code to do certificate cheking
tends to be more compact.

Thanks for the pointer, that means if we decide we want OpenSSL, Jerry
will be a resource. No need to bug him specifically about it yet,
though.

Could be, but the traffic on emacs-devel suggests that it's not very
robust to misconfigured servers, so doing certificate checking well
might be more or less annoying with gnutls.
