Dear Bug Team!
The customize buffers seem to have missing buttons. I noticed this
with Gnus's "G c" (customize group): there was no "Done" button
to
exit the customize buffer. The same goes, for example, for
M-x customize-variable RET gnus-select-method RET. However, there is
a drop-down element "Reset" (but still no buttons).

This is strange, you don't have widgets compiled in but your configure line
doesn't seem to indicate that you excluded them. Right now you need to
compile in widgets to see the buttons.

thanks for the bug report
i had this same problem a while ago
the cause is you havent specified a widget set
add --with-widgets=lucid or --with-widgets=athena or --with-widgets=motif
to your compile options and recompile
that should fix the problem

thanks for the bug report
i had this same problem a while ago
the cause is you havent specified a widget set
add --with-widgets=lucid or --with-widgets=athena or
--with-widgets=motif to your compile options and recompile
that should fix the problem
Is it, then, a bug that customize buffers don't generate text widgets
when a GUI widget set is not available? Text buttons are used on other
parts of the page (ie, toggle -- and shouldn't this be a button?) so it
shouldn't be that much work.

i had this same problem a while ago
the cause is you havent specified a widget set

Peter, thanks for the response. I recompiled with
--with-widgets=lucid and I still have no buttons in the described
circumstances.:( Yes, I did a "make clean" before the excersise.
The configure command:
./configure --with-widgets=lucid --with-toolbars=no --with-sound=no
Anyhow, shouldn't the compile system choose *some* widget set by
default?

It does. The default is dependent on the window system toolkit.
--with-widgets does something else. It enables the feature of
embedding arbitrary window-system widgets in displayed text, which
until recently was quite buggy (and continues to generate crash
reports due to a bug in Solaris Motif which has a buggy implementation
of the progress bar widget). Many people choose to do without it, as
the only implemented uses are eye candy.
The implementation of "native buttons" in Customize is buggy and
should be fixed. How, I'm not sure, but there should be a way to
determine if native widgets are available, and use Customize's old
handcrafted buttons if not.
I suspect your particular problem has to do with --with-toolbars=no,
but I don't know what.
