`quit-char' is defined in console.elc. If console.elc is
zero-length then something is wrong; do you have a console.el? Your
dump-paths.elc appears to have suffered the same fate.

Thanks for the clues, but I still remain as in the dark as ever.
console.el exists and is 1618 bytes long. console.elc is indeed zero
length. Console.el is the same length in the downloaded tar file. I had
a quick look and it looks reasonable.
dump-paths.elc exists and is 1341 bytes long
dump-paths.el exists and is 2434 bytes long
I have attached to 2 .el files in question.
