If I create ~/.xemacs/ and copy the file there, "Update index" now works. Thanks. But "Update installed packages" still breaks. In a different way now, though. Do you want me to eval-buffer some files to get a better backtrace? The warnings seem to be caused by me having experimental versions of some modules installed -- have the modules versions on the ftp.xemacs.org server gone backwards? I'm pointing XEmacs at the "experimental modules" download choice.
