You might try removing src/regex.o, compiling with the usual set of
flags for GCC plus -DREGEX_MALLOC, then simply "make" in the top-level
directory.
Note that the most recent release of the 21.1 series is 21.1.14, which
contain fixes addressing this crash, and that the 21.1 series itself
has recently been retired. The current stable version of XEmacs is
21.4.12.
