I think this described in the next sentence of the FSF docstring: "[Return] Value is the equivalent cons cell (CODE . Well, yes, but that doesn't even match the examples Skip gives (all of which have cdr of nil, not a character). The #'set-extent-property docstring doesn’t mention a semantics for the cdr of the syntax-table property.
