Turn this around 180 degrees.
How would a guy unaware of Openwin know to look in /usr/openwin/lib
to find the X libraries he needs?
I didn't install my Sun so I can't tell whether my /usr/X11 directory
was installed by my sysadmin or by solaris. But if Solaris doesn't install
/usr/X11, even as link to openwin, then I consider it as bogus as /usr/dt. A
bit less bogus, actually, because if you know the name `openwin', you can find
the directory rather easily. However, if you know the name `cde', I challenge
you to find the /usr/dt directory!
2) It is a reasonable assumption that if a /usr/dt exists, that the
machine has CDE installed.
Not on my Sun, but I won't fight on this point.
As such, it's probably preferable to use the Motif libraries
found in
/usr/dt/lib over any other Motif-oid patterns of bits you may find, because
the /usr/dt version is the one that the vendor built to work with the CDE
environment.
I don't pretend you should use another one. I pretend that if a
machine has CDE and a Motif lib is provided with it, then, I should be able to
find it is a place *at least* a bit intuitive. Like /usr/lib/cde/,
/usr/X11/lib/, even /usr/cde/lib maybe ... but /usr/dt :-/
Now, if you want to start talking abominations, [...]
The rest, I'm with you 100%
