I don't know about this error, but I know that your package index does _not_ get
updated if you have the error
(2) (error/warning) Error in process filter: (ftp-error FTP Error:
DIR
failed: 229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||36408|))
Instead, the locally installed package index is copied to ~/.xemacs/.
Your type error might be a follow-up error.
In your situation, I would try to update EFS manually and see if the error still
occurs. Fetch efs-1.33-pkg.tar.gz from the XEmacs package download, and unpack
it in /usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/. Restart XEmacs, and try to update
the package index again. Maybe that helps.
Cheers,
Joachim
