This is covered in the file 'PROBLEMS' that came with the XEmacs
source:
** General
*** Don't use -O2 with gcc 2.8.1 and egcs 1.0 under SPARC architectures
without also using `-fno-schedule-insns'.
gcc will generate incorrect code otherwise, typically resulting in
crashes in the function skip-syntax-backward.
