Raymond Wiker writes:
As the subject says: arc-mode.el (in os-utils) provides the wrong
symbol, which causes (require 'arc-mode) to fail. FSF Emacs
provides both, with the comment that 'archive-mode is provided for
compatibility with a historical, incorrect version.
Mike Sperber seems to have access to a time machine, as he fixed this
(in the way proposed) in February. You can
- get updated sources from
http://hg.xemacs.org/os-utils, or
- download the prebuilt package by ftp from
ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/os-utils-1.42-...
and install with tar, or
- set `package-get-remote' to host "ftp.xemacs.org" and directory
"pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages", or to one of the
alternative sites listed in `package-get-pre-release-download-sites',
and use `list-packages' to get the latest versions of various packages.
A lot of the download sites seem to have problems or be out of date.
I've had success with
ftp.fr.xemacs.org.
