Not really. :-/
The progress-bar is broken on mac-osx and, I think, X Window in
general, but I don't know the technical details.
The X Window (not GTK) implementation of the widget was borrowed from
a third party, and it's just broken. I've spent hours staring at the
code and never finding the bug.
Working with X is like that -- there are undocumented restrictions on
X functions, and unfortunately violating them sometimes causes a
crash. The X developers do not consider it their duty to document
these restrictions, let alone check function arguments for violations.
