Other operations might trigger it, but I haven't hit them yet. Other things I have done with this build is run the latest Oort gnus from the packages, which worked quite well. What is weird (to me) about this error, is that it doesn't happen if I build without --with-gtk. Odd that a window system choice would affect the byte-code parsing below.
