it, but this looks like something that's going to be a while before it

That's me. Mr. Optimism. :-)
The problem I had was that I was syncing to buggy Emacs code. It's
been awhile, so I should take another look and see if the upstream
problems have been resolved. On the other hand, the upstream code is
now GPL v3, so we need to complete our transition to GPL v3 before
such a sync can be released to the public.
