You're right - after starting from scratch (unpacking distribution
&applying patches), it worked fine. But I still wonder why I didn't see
this problem with earlier versions. I unpacked the distribution for 21.2.15
and afterwards applied patches and built for 21.2.16, 21.2.17 and 21.2.18
resp. - for 16 and 17 it was ok, but not for 18 ... (?)

Hmm, this is some kind of dependency problem, it seems. After I
recompiled from scratch (i.e., in a totally virgin compilation
directory), things were fine. Sorry about that, and maybe a hint for
others.
