I just tried and got a similar response (although mine died at the password). Connecting a 2nd time worked. My suspicion is that the problem is with the FTP server at ftp.us.xemacs.org and not XEmacs or EFS. Try a different mirror site (there are 3 in France, BTW). If you get the same problem from other sites do `M-x efs-report-bug RET' (when the problem occurs).
