Hello
While in GNU emacs define-minor-mode *does* add an entry into the
modeline, it *does not* for XEmacs (21.4.x mule or nomule).
The only way I see it is to write an ugly kludge who adds explicitly
that entry. Does anybody know about a better solution?

it *should* add it to the modeline. this is accomplished using
add-minor-mode, which is called by define-minor-mode. it's possible
that, if you're dynamically changing things, you won't see the change
till you delete a buffer and revisit it.

Ha I was about to tell you that it does not and it is a bug, however
xemacs -vanilla told me different. So I have to check my packages in
order to find the incompatibility.

So I did some testing, not finished yet, there are incompatibilities
with longlines.el which uses define-minor-mode and older pkg such as
appt.el. (I still don't know why). Before I proceed a important
question what is the advantage of using define-minor-mode over the
*old* way of defining a minor mode?

If you know exactly what you're doing, none. However, there are a
number of conventions that you're supposed to follow in initializing a
minor mode, and define-minor-mode ensures that.
The problem is probably that XEmacs's version is not fully synched to
GNU Emacs's.
