In Emacs, `C-h a' and M-x apropos RET differ in "back-end": the latter
searches all symbols, not just functions and variables,
I'm not sure about the difference between "all symbols" and "just
functions and variables", but in XEmacs you can customize
`hyper-apropos-programming-apropos' to toggle between searching for
all the functions/variables and just searching for interactive
functions/user variables. The default is the "programming" version,
i.e. search for everything.
[the moment XEmacs switches from ELisp to ANSI CL, I switch from
Emacs
to XEmacs. :-] #<you may consider this a troll bait, but I mean it

If that is the only reason for you to change, then you'll be
disappointed in XEmacs. I don't think it will switch to CL any time
soon.
