You're right about the garbage, but that's not internal; it looks like "escapeless JIS" to me. Solving this is really ugly, though; what you would have to do is (1) detect the locale's encoding; I don't know if there is a portable way to do this; with `LANG=ja', the locale could be ja_JP.jis7, ja_JP.sjis, ja_JP.ujis, ja_JP.utf8, or something else for that matter. How to decide?
