Thanks for the thorough description, David. I'm now able to
reproduce the behaviour, exactly the way you described. But only if
using your .xemacs/* (I had to comment out the visual-basic-mode
stuff since I don't have it, but it won't affect this, I'm sure).
Unfortunately, I don't have time right now to look deeper into
the
problem, but will do so soonish unless someone else beats me to it.

You could try fiddling around with the font-lock settings in your
init.el, and see how it affects this. I the only font-lock related
thing I have in my init.el is (require 'font-lock). Or try to
reproduce this with other modes, or load the files in different
order. Help in isolating this would be helpful (maybe it's
psgml.el(xml-mode)).

I doubt that it's the
xemacs.org mailing list archive that has
dragged spammers to you. I post a lot to the lists, and receive
practically no spam to my @xemacs.org address (which I always use
when posting there).
You may be right; since I am not 100% sure the XEmacs list was the
cause of the spam I'll take a chance and CC xemacs-beta on this reply.
Mailing the bug description you sent me to xemacs-beta would maybe
make the process of fixing go faster.
I've done some tests which confirm that my init.el/custom.el are
irrelevant. Try these three tests on your system.
1. Create two files, simple.el and foo.xml containing one line each:
simple.el
(defvar running-xemacs (string-match "XEmacs\\|Lucid" emacs-version))
foo.xml
<foo></foo>
2. Rename .xemacs/custom.el and init.el so that they are not found by
XEmacs.
Test 1. Control: colours are normal.
launch XEmacs
C-xC-f simple.el
M-x font-lock-fontify-buffer
Note the colours of "running-xemacs" and the string "XEmacs\\|Lucid".
If you're good with colours you can kill the session and just remember
what colour they were. If in doubt, minimize the thing and start a
new XEmacs session for the other two tests.
Test 2. colours are incorrect
launch XEmacs
C-xC-f foo.xml
(On the echo line:)
Your mail address? your_username@MACHINE_NAME
C-aC-k <RET>
(On the echo line:)
Save address for future sessions? (y or n)
n
C-xC-f simple.el
M-x font-lock-fontify-buffer
Notice the colours are incorrect.
Test 3. XEmacs crashes
launch XEmacs
C-xC-f simple.el
M-x font-lock-fontify-buffer
C-xC-f foo.xml
(On the echo line:)
Your mail address? your_username@MACHINE_NAME
C-aC-k <RET>
(On the echo line:)
Save address for future sessions? (y or n)
n
XEmacs crashes at this point. You can load simple.el and then the
foo.xml and fontify afterwards with no trouble, or even load the xml,
fontify, load the el, fontify. The crash only seems to happen if you
load the el file, fontify it, then try to load the xml file.
Hope this helps
