There is a problem in the actual beta version of Gnus (5.10.3) and the rfc2047 encoding of message headers. sadly this bug seems only to occur if you also use a beta XEmacs. XEmacs from the 21.4 series seem to have no problems with the new code in rfc2047.el. In another posting dave wrote that he's not sure about the syntax table being at fault. It could also be `mm-find-mime-charset-region'.
