sorry this is a bit off-topic, but it relates to me being able to test xemacs
under linux ...
1] do recent versions of linux support dhcp? my dsl router requires this.
2] i've heard that motif recently became free. do binaries of it come with
recent versions of linux? if so, do those versions cost more? is there a
recent version of the "motif programmer's reference" on the net? [i have a
very
old and tattered version i stole from sun years ago.]

i've run dhcp under linux for about a year now, and so far it works just
fine. uses and provides dhcp services. oh, and i also use dsl for months
without problems under linux. so i guess the answer is yes :)
motif i dunno.

The short answer is "yes, but you might have to download the daemon dhcpd"

Not yet. The OpenGroup announcement about Motif is very recent - only
about a week ago. I'm sure the Linux distributers will pick this up
pretty quickly, but AFAIK none of the distributions have it yet.
However, it's pretty straightforward to just download and install the
motif sources - I did this a few days ago and had no hitches - check
http://www.opengroup.org

All you ever pay for with Linux is support. If you don't care about
telephone support from RedHat, you can download everything you need,
from debian.org (I personally prefer the debian distribution to
RedHat) or redhat.com, or if a download is too tedious, you can get
CD's for about $2 at cheapbytes.com.

Well, the source kit comes with a lot of doc, but I'm not sure if
that's the same thing as the Programmer's Reference you mention.

none of the respectable distributions will distribute it, becuase it is

sure, i know this, but historically, since motif is not free, red hat and others
have provided versions with motif for $$.

it is not really free. the license does not meet the open source
definition or get rms' approval. i'm not sure gpl software is allowed to
link to it. i haven't heard of any linux distributions distributing motif.
personally, i would go with lesstif.

Only if you are committed to keeping your system "RMS approved". I had
no qualms about buying and running commercial software under Linux
including Motif distributions. I see no reason not to use OpenMotif.
While there is a lot of good software released under the GPL I could not
cope with being retsicted to running only free software.

Well, even XEmacs is not RMS approved in the strictest sense.

Although XEmacs is free software, XEmacs interacts with many other
pieces of software, and is agnostic about whether those other pieces
are free or not. So XEmacs has always had support for Motif. But
Motif is of course not required.
